  • Summer Heat is Coming!!

Summer is coming and with it heat and we all want to get out and have fun! However, taking our dogs & or greyhounds out in the middle of the day or leaving them outside even in the back yard can KILL them, and sadly it has killed many. CG Magazine this month has several articles regarding this deadly issue.

NEVER, EVER take your dog for a walk during the middle or hot parts of the day.
Even mornings and late evenings can be too hot for them, and Especially if they are Black dogs. Black dogs attract the heat and get hotter faster than any other color. White dogs can sunburn. The sun can hurt their eyes, just like it does ours.

This specifically is THE Reason why GRI Never walks dogs thru the parades during hot summer months, we let them ride on a covered float with plenty of water and spray bottles to keep them wet. (So, come on everyone, remember WE are the Example to the general public.) Walking your hot tired panting dogs in the heat can not only kill them, it makes us look bad as well.)
If your dog starts to show ANY symptoms of heat exhaustion, panting, staggering, dropping to the ground, immediately submerse the entire dog in water, giving them something to drink and spraying them down with a bottle of water at this point is not enough. Trying to rush them to the vet probably wont help either, they need to be soaked with cool water! If there is a hose close by, or a ditch with water, whatever you can find to soak them in, do it, THEN by all means rush them to the vet. And give them water to drink too, but that alone is not enuf.

A sad but true story from the CG magazine will soon follow on our website, regarding a grehound that died in her own back yard after running in the back yard.

Greyhounds are removed from racing for many different reasons, not only because they may be "too slow". Heart problems, injuries, scar tissue build up, and other. Your greyhound may not be meant to run anywhere fast and definitely NOT for long periods, and NEVER in the heat.

You all remember the two boys that died on a hot July day in the foothils when their owners took them for a walk! What a heart break for them and the dogs and all of us. By the time they got them back to the hot car and down to the Emergency room, they were both dead!
And last Summer, a small red female escaped the fence on a hot day and died in a passerbys arms from heat exhaustion after she ran herself to death!
Don’t let this happen to your dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And please remember, Interceptor is only good for deworming and heart worm preventatives, mosquitos carry West Nile Virus, ask your vet what to put on your greyhound for fleas, ticks, mosquitos, etc., that is safe to use along with Interceptor.

And last, but not least, if you camp or boat with your greyhound, they still MUST Always be on a leash, never tied up, and in a life jacket if they go with you on a boat!!
It is that time of year, please take precautions! Thank you,
And Have a Safe and Fun Summer Everyone!
